The Festival takes place on the wooded Gurten hilltop, a venue which is considered one of the most scenic in all of Switzerland. The Gurten, Bern's local peak, encompasses the largest public park in the region and is a popular destination for outings. Getting up to the Gurten takes either twenty minutes on foot or only seven minutes with the newly renovated railway.

76,000 visitors celebrate at the Gurtenfestival

Gurtenfestival visitors were celebrating for four days straight – come wind, rain, or sunshine. With three sell-out days and 16,000 people on Thursday, the Gurtenfestival set a new record with a total of 76,000 visitors.

Not only was the musical line-up extremely diversified, but the weather was so as well, featuring wind, rain, sunshine, and everything in between. But the rainfall on Friday night and the subsequent wind storms couldn’t put a dent in the high spirits of the audience.

Headliner Lenny Kravitz more than fulfilled everybody’s high expectations with an impressive show. In addition, Frank Turner, Xavier Rudd, and Snow Patrol as well as local heroes Patent Ochsner and Züri West created some magical Gurten moments. And during Snow Patrol’s closing performance on Sunday night, a double rainbow arced across the sky right above the main stage.

The 30th Gurtenfestival will take place from 18th to 21st July 2013. The first headliner has already been named: the German band «Die Toten Hosen» will shake the mountain above Berne next summer.

72.000 enthusiastic fans at the Gurtenfestival

On Friday and Saturday, the festival was completely sold out. Thursday had a very good turn-out with 14.000 visitors. On Sunday, 18.000 visitors defied wind and weather and enjoyed an exciting last day.

Mostly ideal festival weather made for an enthusiastic and peaceful atmosphere on the Gurten. Once again, the Gurten visitors were described by several artists as “very musically adept” and “an amazing crowd”. We had several of those legendary “Gurten moments” where 20.000 people were all dancing together – from the main stage all the way to the last row. Some of the highlights included the performances of 2manydjs, Kasabian, Underworld, Kaiser Chiefs, Pendulum as well as Jamiroquai, the big Saturday night headliner.

On the east stage, The Streets and The Ting Tings created some magical moments, and Sophie Hunger enchanted the audience with her impressive performance. The appearance of 77 Bombay Street with approximately 7.000 visitors marks one of the biggest highlights in the five year history of the west stage.

There were no major incidents throughout the entire duration of the festival. Unfortunately, Plan B had to cancel his Saturday appearance for health reasons, but the Swiss band Kummerbuben spontaneously agreed to fill the gap.

Jamiroquai, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Brandon Flowers, Beady Eye, Underworld, Pendulum, 2manydjs (live), The National, Kaiser Chiefs, Beatsteaks, The Streets, Jamie Cullum, The Script, Eels, Sophie Hunger, The Ting Tings, Kate Nash, Glasvegas, Bloody Beetroots DC 77, Trentemøller (live), Royal Republic, Christoph Mae, The Vaccinces, Noah & The Whale, Chromeo, I Blame Coco, Katzenjammer, Blumentopf, Calle 13, Angus & Julia Stone, Gustav & The Black Poets, Aloe Blacc, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Kummerbuben, Baze, 77 Bombay Street, Pamela Mendez, The Rambling Wheels, Tommy Vercetti, Caroline Chevin, Bubble Beatz, 7 Dollar Taxi, The Bianca Story, Halunke, Daliah, Destilacija, Das Pferd, Junes, Dead Bunny, Trashy Lullabies, Hot Running Blood, Flat Noise Bag, Fygeludi, Menic, Maurice Merlo, Climbing Tree, Julian Amacker, Danee Woo, Lina Button, Christina Maria, Luk von Bergen, We Love Machines, Patrick Bishop, Timothy Jaromir, Biggles

«Happy, happy, happy»

The promoters of the 27th Gurtenfestival are very pleased with the positive results of this year‘s festival. Basked mostly in summery sunshine with only a bit of rain on Saturday, it was a festival with many musical highlights. With 12,000 visitors on Thursday and 20,000 each on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (sell-outs), the promoters once again seemed to have captured the taste of the audience.
The audience experienced a very peaceful festival with impressive performances on all three stages. The summery weather provided an additional bonus to the Gurtenfestival, and neither the audience nor the grounds seemed to mind a bit of rain on Saturday.
The artists were happy as well and sent some very positive comments back to the promoters. The band Huecco from Spain, for example, were thrilled by the Gurten audience. They said that they usually experienced such an enthusiastic atmosphere only in front of their own home crowd.
The promoters were happy as well: four peaceful, happy days without any complications – neither with the artists nor with the audience.
Among the musical highlights were undoubtedly the performances of Amy Macdonald, Skunk Anansie, Babyshambles, Gossip, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Groove Armada, and John Butler, who – thanks to his musical genius – was able to rock the Gurten up to the very last row.

Four days Gurten festival, three of them sold out. Sunny, rainy, chilly and muddy, lively atmosphere and numerous concert highlights! The 26th. Gurten festival was one of the most successful of all times.

That just about sums up the Gurten festival 2009, the crowning glory of which was on Sunday evening with the explosive-ecstatic performance from Juliette Lewis. Shortly before that, Travis secured themselves the euphoric climax of this year’s festival on Berne’s local peak. The Scots began with a little restraint despite their rock songs but - at the latest - they had won their audience over when singer Fran Healy came off the stage to dance with the fans. Finally the whole Gurten hill was quivering when Healy, to the refrain of “ Why Does It Always Rain On Me” invited the audience from front to back to join in on the biggest mass Pogo dance the Gurten festival has ever seen.

Having had to cancel a show in Spain for safety reasons, the Kings Of Leon gave a powerful, intensive concert and enjoyed a royal end-of-tour finish into the sunset, after a gruelling six-week tour.

Oasis also showed themselves from a rare playful side and seemed to really enjoy the interconnection with the audience. Noel dedicated the song “ Masterplan” to the Bernese football club YB and front-man Liam even lobbed his tambourine into the euphoric audience at the end of the concert!

The brilliant singer and rapper Peter Fox from Berlin delivered a true spectacle with sixteen musicians and dancers.

Tricky, the Prince of Darkness, lived up to his title and cast convention to the winds with his demonic underworld music. For some a little too much to handle, for others plain brilliant.

Already on Thursday the Glaswegian Indie-Rockers Franz Ferdinand lit a whole firework display of hits and delivered the first highlight with their brilliant live performance.

The Swiss scene was widely represented on the West stage (Waldbühne), which offered itself as a small Woodstock-like alternative to the big stages.

Oasis, Kings Of Leon, Franz Ferdinand, Travis, Bloc Party, Razorlight, Peter Fox, Tricky, White Lies, Pendulum, Glasvegas, Dropkick Murphys, Röyksopp, Ayo, Juliette Lewis, The Gaslight Anthem, Ska P, Silbermond, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Stress, Sido, Eskimo Joe, Baddies, Hockey, Bonaparte, Blue King Brown, Patent Ochsner, Lovebugs, Seven, Ritschi, Phenomden, Kummerbuben, Sorgente, Electric Blanket, Gimma, Delilahs, Heidi Happy, Wurzel5, Eluveitie, Moonraisers, Da Cruz, Solange La Frange, Männer am Meer, Churchhill, The Gamebois, Marius Tschirky, Redcharly, Henrik Belden, Loose Connection, Familie Gantenbein, New Jack, Phanamanation, Gus MacGregor, Oli Kehrli, Webba, Fygeludi

The 25th. edition of the Gurtenfestival was fittingly celebrated without a pompous birthday cake and huge fireworks, instead with a versatile programme and sunny festival weather.

Apart from the big names there were other unforgettable concerts, like Soul-legend Solomon Burke, the Australian band John Butler Trio or Amy MacDonald, the secret star of the festival. “That was really one of my best concerts” Amy said with sparkling eyes after her performance. “ I am absolutely enchanted with the city of Berne and the Gurten festival!”

Constant rain, storms with thunder and lightning. The 24th Gurtenfestival wasn't blessed with the weather

But... despite mud, wet and sometimes chilly, it was rocked, danced and sung-along like never before. The bands were very impressed that the audience did not leave them to play on their own in the rain. Cypress Hill, the absolute favourites this year, left this heart-warming message:
“Man, that hill rocks, unbelievable! Big respect to the crowd!”

On the revived “Waldbühne” The Young Gods played a fantastic set but also Tomazobi and Gaugehill caused the audience to swarm to the Waldbühne slopes.

Stress, as energetic entertainers, showed once again that they could excite the audience on the main stage as if they were the headliners of the day. The media celebrated the Swedish band Clawfinger as the musical climax, who actually introduced their new CD on then east stage. Donovan Frankenreiter finally brought the sun to the Gurten on Sunday, also to the hearts of the audience. The concert from Patent Ochsner was so emotional that it brought tears to the eyes of their fans.

Joss Stone ended the festival magically, not only because of her lilac dress, but because of her exceptional voice.

Four days to remember

The festival ran, for the first time, for 4 days. Already on Thursday the 15th.of July there were 14,000 Hardcore-Gurten fans who came for the best “garden party” in Switzerland. The following festival days (Friday,Saturday and Sunday) were completely sold out with 16,000 visitors per day. Altogether more than 35,000 music lovers made the pilgrimage up the hill and enjoyed the 21st. Gurten festival with 40 bands and superb weather.

Party, party, party!
Besides the headliners like Placebo(GB), SKA-P(E) or Seeed(D), the smaller bands created their own highlights: Ozomatli, Spearhead(USA) and Pantéon Rococo(MEX) used their Latin-bonus and played their way into the hearts of the audience after only a few beats. Unsurpassable was also the 2 hour set from the German fun-punkers “Die Aerzte” who turned out to be real Gurten fans! Local stars like Züri West, Stephan Eicher and Plüsch were worthy co-headliners and proved that they didn’t need to be afraid of the international competition.

Re-usable brings re-sults
The introduction of re-usable crockery at a festival of this dimension was a European premiere and- an absolute success! The festival grounds stayed pretty clean and we certainly knocked the top off of the garbage mountain! We again had re-usable beakers, as last year, plus the PET-recycling system.

Quality before Quantity
The many positive feedbacks from bands and fans show us that our personal demands are appreciated with regard to safety, cleanliness, quality and a good infrastructure. According to Leif Skov, one of the founder members of the Danish “Roskilde” festival, the Gurten festival is praised as one of the best organized festivals in Europe. He paid us a visit again this year to see for himself how the re-usable crockery idea would prove itself.

At last three days of wonderful summer weather! Once again the Gurtenfestival was totally sold out. Oasis did a fantastic 90 minute show and Jovanotti thrilled with an incredible performance and "joie de vivre". It was also possible to offer a separate sleeping-zone with a capacity for 5,000 igloo tents, thanks to a large area offered by friendly farmers. This zone was also a complete sell-out. Further highlights from the 19th. Gurten festival: Lamb, Gotan Project, Die Toten Hosen, Air, Chaka Khan, Beverley Knight, Tiziano Ferro, Seeed, Gentleman Badmarsh & Shri, Ska P, Jarabe De Palo, Bebel Gilberto, Los De Abajao, Samy Deluxe and many more. Oh no, not again! Three days straight of heavy rain and frigid temperatures – but, no matter how lousy the weather, it never seems to faze our fans. The Gurten Festival 2001 was again a total sellout. Musical highlights: Manu Chao shrouded in fog, the enchanting Erykah Badu, and a razzmatazz Fiesta Latina with Daniela Mercury.
The Spanish ska-punk band Ska P whipped us up to a frenzied furore, and the meltingly beautiful Sunday Matinée with Pink Martini moved us to tears. A famous first in 2001 was that fans could spend the night on the Gurten in two-person igloo tents spread out over three separate sleeping zones. This new idea turned out to be such a walloping success that we have had to rethink the entire concept for 2002. With the help of the local farmers, we found some acreage large enough to accommodate 6,000 tents. A separate access way, toilets, showers, illuminated paths, plus a special security crew should ensure that this sleeping zone will now meet everybody's requirements.

Manu Chao, Erykah Badu, Morcheeba, Die Ärzte, PJ Harvey, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Fun Lovin' Criminals, St.Germain, Motörhead, Incognito, Khaled, Thomas D, Kool & The Gang, Third World, The Young Gods, Daniela Mercury, Sergent Garcia, Pink Martini, K's Choice, H-BlockX, Die Happy, Ska P, Jan Delay, Core22, Smartship Friday, Hanery Amman sowie die DJs Rainer Trüby, Stéphane B (Superfunk), Jazzanova, Max Fresh, Alex Dallas Earthbound, Minus8

Sold out again! Despite three days of cold and rain, the audience had a real blast and defied the filthy weather with humour and a thumping good mood. An enlarged Festival entrance, new relaxing areas, the Comfort Crew, an improved lavatory system and the ChillOut zone featuring DJ José Padilla from Ibiza were all Festival innovations in 2000 which proved immensely popular with everyone. Some Festival highlights: Moby, HIM, Moloko, Reprazent, Iggy Pop, Pet Shop Boys, Maceo Parker, Angélique Kidjo, Tower of Power, The Wailers, The Temptations, Superfunk, Asian Dub Foundation, Guano Apes, Laurent Garnier, Alpha Blondy, plus many more.

A three-day sellout, the best that summer can offer weatherwise, and terrific vibes. No doubt about it, the greatest Gurten Festival yet – thanks not least to the many well-known Swiss acts. Together with Skunk Anansie, Faithless, Everlast, Die Fantastischen Vier, Bloodhound Gang and numerous other international bands and DJs they stirred up enough excitement for 45,000 fans to freak out for three days. The new concept of redimensioning the Festival to accommodate an audience of 15,000 per day proved to be a good idea.

Skunk Anansie, Faithless, Die Fantastischen Vier, UB40, Keziah Jones, Tricky, Bloodhound Gang, Jonny Lang, Everlast, Alliance Ethnik, Reef, Urban Species, Republica, Beverly Jo Scott, Xavier Naidoo, Dieter Thomas Kuhn, Candy Dulfer's Extravaganza, Björn Again, Mangu, Liquido, Gölä & Bänd, Züri West, Patent Ochsner, Subzonic, Lovebugs

Finally, the sun put in an appearance. The good weather and bands such as Portishead, Asian Dub Foundation, Transglobal Underground, Rammstein, Sinéad O’Connor, Herbert Grönemeyer, The Corrs, Therapy?, Chumbawamba, plus many others attracted more than 36,000 fans to the Gurten. Two new Festival installations were an instant success: The Powerzone, a skater area complete with a big half-pipe, and The Lovezone, a DJ and dance area.

Portishead, Rammstein, Sinéad O’Connor, Herbert Grönemeyer, Chumbawamba, Asian Dub Foundation, Transglobal Underground, Moby, The Corrs, Jestofunk, Therapy?, Bobby Byrd, Tito & Tarantula, Ash, Such A Surge, Schweisser, Oomph, Latin Crossingss feat. Steve Winwood, Tito Puente, & Arturo Sandoval

Europe was literally inundated by heavy rainfalls in July. Despite the nasty weather, many of the most loyal fans turned up for the Festival and a fantastically good mood spread throughout the audience, infecting artists and helpers alike. Some of the highlights of this year were: Neneh Cherry, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Isaac Hayes, Faithless, Nuyorican Soul, De La Soul and Run DMC.
